Welcome to another edition of Etsy featured sellers. Today's feature is Sarah of S. Jane-Cute Stuff. Cute definitely describes her whimsical wide-eyed and Crayola-hued felt creatures, stickers and pins featuring her illustrations, and accessories! Here is our convo interview.
First, give a little bit of background about yourself.
My name is Sarah Jane! I recently graduated with a BFA in new media from the Maine College of Art. I've lived in Maine my whole life and I'm moving away soon with my super cool boyfriend to Green Bay. (scary!) I like to day dream about 24/7 dance parties and jumping on beds. I like to play video games like Guitar Hero because it makes me hopeful that someday, I will, in fact be in a band. I love cupcakes, but I hate baking, so cupcake donations are always welcome!
How did you start designing and how long have you been doing so?
Well, I've always had a pretty intense love of color and design. I had an interest in graphic design and illustration but I was getting bored just sitting in front of a screen, moving type around. I started making promotional items for a fake-band project I did one semester using my illustrations and I realized how much I loved making objects, not just designing them. So, things just kind of went from there.. I made pins and stickers, I learned to crochet and started using felt a whole bunch. Using the design and color skills I've gained in school are incredibly important to the work I make. I'm super picky about color combinations and designing the packaging for the items I sell. I make myself crazy with it sometimes, but it's ok, because I think (I hope!) that in the end the effort is visible.
How did you discover Etsy?
Through one of my friends, I think. She opened a shop and I just thought it was the coolest thing ever! It took me a long time before I gained the courage to open my shop. I joined but just peeked at other people's shops and then one day I just went for it. It's such a great community of people who are both artists and crafters. It's nice to find a place where I feel like the kind of work I make is appreciated for it's craft.
What inspires you?
Oh my word! So much stuff! cute stuff, cupcakes, stewardesses from the 60s, kites, video games, maps, music, my mom, fashion...
I could go on forever and I'm pretty sure that the list would just get weirder and weirder! I pull a lot of subtle references from things. I'm pretty sure that most of the time, only I can see them. Like with some of my felt pals, the colors are modeled after some old airline uniforms I saw in a book. Or like the cupcake badge is just the first step in my plan to make my own set of merit badges a la girl scouts/ the game Psychonauts.
My inspirations are all over the place, but they're really what drives me!
If you could describe yourself in one word, what would it be?
Well, I had to ask for help on this one, which is lame, but the general consensus was "adorable", so I choose that!
What is your favorite book, movie and song, if you have one?
Book - The Secret History by, Donna Tartt. Everyone on earth needs to read that book! It's amazing!
Movie - The Warriors! My friend Bobbi and I have pretty much been going nuts about it for the past few months.
Song - Currently, my favorite song is Empty by Metric. It's beautiful and has really great build up and the singer's voice always makes me so emotional! Even when it's an upbeat song! Metric is the best!
And a few words describing your shop?
S. Jane is a place for me to share the things that I am having an absolute ball making. It's cute and colorful and hopefully things that can be enjoyed by all ages! S. Jane is what makes me happy, so I'm hoping it will make someone else happy too! I feel like I'm never quite sure what is going to pop up next in the shop. However, I don't think my current love affair with felt will be over anytime soon!
Where else can you earn a merit badge in cupcakes? Get on over to S. Jane on Etsy and check out those awesome Satellite Magnets, too.
